Maverick's Surf Break      Pillar Point / Princeton California

Below:  Swimming out from Pillar Point on an average day.
Below:  An average day.  Surfers waiting for bigger waves are seen in the right center of the photograph
as small dots because the break is so far ou
t.  A unique subsurface structure focuses waves at Maverick's,
making the waves bigger at Maverick's and smaller to the north and south, and at the same time cutting off the
bottom which forces the crest higher.  Note the remains of smaller waves in the far left of the photo.
Below: Princeton Harbor as seen  from the bluff overlooking Maverick's beach. There are several sea
food restaurants featuring fresh fish and crab caught locally. The area is spotted with hotels and bed and
breakfast inns which can be expensive.  Almost all give discounts on weekdays.  The area is growing
and traffic is becoming a problem.  However, Princeton is still a great get away and within  walking
distance to Maverick's break, either along the beach or on paved road.
Below, parking at Maverick's is limited and closes at sunset.  The southern tip of Maverick's beach (left). The
northern view of Maverick's beach (right).
Thank you.  I hope your enjoyed the photos.                                     Copy Right 2007 Ron G Mahurin
The break at Maverick's is
considered one of the top big
wave surf spots in the world.
Several lives have been lost
to gigantic waves.

Each Spring Maverick's is
host to a big wave surfing
contest featuring pro  surfers
from all over the world.
However, most winners are
local. In 2007 the contest was
cancelled because waves
must be at least 25' for the
contest to be held.  No big
waves appeared from
February to the end of  March.
